Accessibility statement

This website is run by James Williamson Architects Ltd. We want everyone to be able to read it, use the budget tool and the quiz, look at the photographs and get in contact, whatever device or assistive technology they use. This page says what we do about that, where the site may still fall short, and how to tell us.

What we aim for

The site is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Every change is tested automatically against the WCAG 2.0 A and AA and 2.1 AA rules, at desktop and phone widths, before it is published, and the build fails if a test fails. We also run Lighthouse audits on a sample of pages.

What is in place

  • A "skip to content" link at the top of every page, and a visible focus outline on every link, button and form field.
  • Everything works with a keyboard alone: the menu, the photograph viewer, the home-page slideshow, the budget tool, the quiz and both forms.
  • The home-page slideshow has a pause button and a button for each photograph. If your device asks for reduced motion, the photographs do not rotate or zoom, scroll animations are switched off and pages do not transition.
  • Every photograph has a text description, and the build checks for it.
  • Text sits on its background at a contrast of 4.5 to 1 or better, including the white text over the hero photographs.
  • Form fields are labelled. If something is missing or wrong, the problem is explained under the field and your cursor is moved to it.
  • The page language is declared as British English so screen readers pronounce it correctly.
  • Nothing moves or plays automatically other than the slideshow, and no content flashes.

Where it may fall short

  • The free guide is a PDF. It is designed to be read on a phone or a computer, but it may not be fully tagged for screen readers. If you would like the content in another form, ask and we will send it.
  • Booking a call takes you to Calendly's own pages, and directions to the office open in Google Maps. Their accessibility is theirs to maintain.
  • Some older journal articles were moved across from the previous site, and a few of their images carry shorter descriptions than we would write today. We are working through them.

Tell us

If any part of this site is hard to use, or you need something in a different format, email james@jameswilliamson.archi or call 01483 338253. James replies personally, usually within two working days. Tell us what you were trying to do and which page you were on, and we will fix it or find another way to get you what you need.
