Walthamstow Rear Extension and Renovation

Walthamstow home reimagined with light-filled rear extension, open-plan living, and terraced garden.

In Walthamstow, East London, a young couple expecting their first child wanted to transform their dark, disjointed home into a bright, social space for family life and entertaining. The existing rear of the house had been poorly extended in the past, resulting in a jumble of rooms with little connection to the garden — which itself sloped steeply away from the house.

We demolished the outdated conservatory and carried out significant structural work to knock through the kitchen, dining room, and new extension into one flowing open-plan space. Carefully positioned rooflights bring consistent daylight into the east-facing home, while underfloor heating beneath the polished concrete floor ensures year-round comfort. The warm, modern feel is completed with plywood kitchen cabinetry, chosen for its natural character and vibrancy.

Large bi-folding doors now open directly onto a landscaped, terraced garden, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. The result is a practical yet inviting home, designed for everyday family life and special gatherings alike — proof that even challenging spaces can be transformed into uplifting, functional living areas.
